There are many huts and tent sites located on Mount Kenya. As you enjoy your trek up the mountain, you’ll find no shortage of shelter from the elements or clearing for your tent.
Naro Moru Route
The mountain huts begin at 3048 m with Met Station Lodge. Met Station Lodge (managed by the same group as Mackinder’s Camp at 4200 m) is located on the Naro Moru Route and sleeps up to thirty people. Met Station Lodge has several latrines, some water taps and a small store.
Mackinder’s Camp is next. A long structure located at 4200 m, the camp sleeps up to forty people. Water and latrines are available.
An alternative to Mackinder’s camp is American Camp at 4250 m. There is a Ranger post nearby and water can be found at nearby Tereki Tarn.
Sirimon Route
Sirimon’s first camp, Judmeier Camp, is also called Old Moses camp. Located at 3340 m, Judmeier Camp has amazing views of the summit of Batian and Nelion.
Next, at 3993 m is Liki North Hut. Located in one of the coldest valleys on the mountain, this hut has walls and floors rife with holes, so make sure to bring your warmest sleeping bag. Liki North Hut is the only hut located North WEST OF THE Moorlands.
Located further up Sirimon’s Route is Shipton’s Bandas at 4300 m. Offering a fantastic view of Nanyuki town, Shipton’s Bandas are above the Shipton’s caves. This is a great area for a launch to the summit climbs.
Chogoria Route
Often considered the most scenic route, Chongoria’s first camp is at 2700 m. Bairunyi clearing and camp site.
Urumandi Hut is next at 3063 m. There are waterfalls and a natural bridge crossing a stream.
Further up Chongoria route is Minto's Hut at 4297 m. Located near the Gorges Valley, Minto’s Hut is a mist-covered, windowless structure.
Nelion
First up on Nelion route is the small, square Austrian Hut at 4790m. It sleeps up to thirty people and is comprised of three rooms. Small tarns make water readily available.
Last, we have Howell Hut at 5188m. Howell Hut is a small aluminum hut on the summit of Nelion. The materials for the hut were brought up the mountain over a total of thirteen separate trips.
